In June of 2008, The Task Force on 21st Century Teaching and Learning: Elevating the Teaching Profession, was formed. Dr. Rex charged the group to recommend strategies that assure every classroom has a caring and qualified teacher who will ensure that South Carolina’s youth are adequately prepared for success in a competitive global economy. More than 35 educators and representatives from a variety of sectors in South Carolina met over a series of weeks to fulfill this directive. The group submitted their final report to Dr. Rex in September which included recommendations based on four key areas:

• Reinventing teacher compensation

• Recasting the teaching profession

• Improving teacher working conditions

• Improving community infrastructure and support for teachers
