Subject-Area Recruitment Programs
Project CREATE allows educators to receive cost-free course work to complete add-on or initial certification in special education. The program has made a positive impact in growing a highly qualified special education teacher workforce in the State. To date, 226 teachers have completed all required content course work for special education certification. The project began with just three colleges and the consortium has expanded in 2007-2008 to include 11 participating colleges and universities. Project CREATE has demonstrated a positive impact in growing a highly qualified special education teacher force in the State. The figures to date are compelling with 1,111 course scholarships awarded, 550 teachers having enrolled in at least one course, 226 teachers having completed all required content course work for special education certification, and participation by 75 of the State’s 89 school districts.
ML-TEACH helps teachers identify courses needed for add-on middle level certification. Eligible teachers may apply for grants of up to $1200 to cover the cost of tuition and other related expenses for approved courses leading to add-on certification in a middle level teaching area. ML-TEACH also collaborates with institutions of higher education (IHEs) to identify and help facilitate courses that are delivered in formats that are flexible and job-embedded to the greatest extent possible.
On-TRACK (Teaching Reading and Content Knowledge) is another project that provides coursework, materials, and other support to help participants complete middle level add-on requirements and become highly qualified in the middle level subjects they teach. Click here to download an application.
