Principal Induction Program (PIP)
Legislation:
Section 59-24-80 Education Accountability Act
"Beginning with the school year 1999-2000, any person appointed to serve for the first time as a building level principal, director of a specialized education unit, or occupational education center director, must participate in the Principal Induction Program."
Purpose:
The purpose of the Principal Induction Program is to add one component of many strategies which are to be combined by the districts to meet the intent of the Educational Accountability Act to improve teaching and learning so that students are equipped with a strong academic foundation. The Principal Induction Program will assist public school districts in providing support and professional development for first year principals.
The Education Accountability Act
Principal Induction Program seeks three outcomes for participants:
- Professional Development: The program includes an orientation and three follow-up sessions to provide training in instructional leadership, assessment and management skills essential to success in the principalship. If a participant meets all course requirements, he or she may earn three (3) hours of recertification credit or sixty (60) hours of renewal credit.
- Support: Each participant is paired with an experienced administrator who serves as a mentor throughout the induction year.
- Collegiality: Through the orientation, participants form a network for sharing resources and ideas. Principal Induction Program follow-up sessions during the induction year provide a forum for exchanging ideas and sharing effective leadership practices and strategies that impact their success as new leaders.
Principal Induction Program participation is required for all newly appointed principals. Career Center Directors may attend the New Career and Technology Education Administrator's Institute, but are required to attend the Principal Induction Orientation and Follow-up Sessions. Information about the induction orientation will be provided upon enrolling in the induction program.
Orientation for Induction Principals:
- The focus of the orientation is on individual, team, and organizational development.
- Sessions are designed to provide the information new principals need to "hit the ground running" and maintain their momentum all year.
- Experienced outstanding practitioners, clinical faculty, community leaders and educational consultants share tips and techniques that new principals can use to survive and thrive in their new positions.
- Participants are provided with a wealth of materials and resources that will serve the new principal as relevant, practical resources for managing a variety of school situations.
